Park Court Apartments Recognized for Excellence in Sustainability

Award presentation to Park Court

RALEIGH—Park Court Apartments in Goldsboro has been honored with one of North Carolina’s top awards for excellence in affordable housing. This year’s Housing North Carolina Award winner for Excellence in Sustainability is an outstanding example of how sustainability and historic preservation can provide safe, affordable and effective housing that benefits both residents and the environment.

Originally constructed in 1962, Park Court Apartments now provides 48 energy-efficient units that have comprehensively integrated a number of sustainable strategies like low-flow water fixtures and drought-tolerant landscaping. The project also prioritized the reuse of existing materials and diverted a large portion of construction waste from landfills.

Some of its most notable sustainability features include the use of previously developed sites so no new ground or vegetation was disturbed, its implementation of non-toxic pest control management and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures to reduce indoor water demand and lower water bills for residents. Park Court’s energy savings is equivalent to diverting 168 tons of waste from a landfill every year and 12,010 trees planted each year.

“Park Court Apartments sets a strong example for sustainability in affordable housing,” said Scott Farmer, executive director of the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, who presented a plaque to the Housing Authority of the City of Goldsboro. “Its LEED v4.1 Gold certification is an incredible accomplishment and should serve as a model for future projects.”

The 2025 Housing North Carolina Awards celebrates its 36th year by recognizing affordable housing accomplishments in the following categories: community impact, creative partnerships, excellence in sustainability and innovation in housing. Awards are being presented by the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency at each property and the winners will participate in a special awards panel at the 2025 NC Affordable Housing Conference in Raleigh on September 30.

The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency is a self-supporting public agency that provides safe, affordable housing opportunities to enhance the quality of life of North Carolinians.
